Why This Matters
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed a serious problem: when demand for diagnostic testing surged in 2020, the market was flooded with hundreds of unvalidated and fraudulent antibody tests. Many were marketed with misleading claims — some promised to diagnose active infections, others claimed to confirm immunity — despite no scientific basis for these assertions.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration responded with over 180 warning letters and enforcement actions against companies selling unauthorized or misbranded tests. The FDA also revoked Emergency Use Authorizations for tests that failed to meet accuracy standards — such as the Chembio DPP COVID-19 IgM/IgG System, withdrawn due to unacceptably high false result rates.
